Lira replica (non-precious metal) for vasilopita. The coin is a replica of an old Gold pound (lira) depicting St. George on one side, and King George of Greece on the other.
In Greek tradition, the cutting of the Vasilopita (St. Basil's bread) is part of any New Year's celebration. According to the custom, a gold coin ("flouri") is inserted in the bread during its preparation. Whoever gets the piece with the gold coin is supposed to have a lucky New Year and the flouri becomes a good luck charm as well as memorabillia for that particular year.
This is a non-precious coin and we recommend wrapping it in some aluminum foil before inserting in the Vasilopita to avoid tarnishing.
