In Greek tradition, the cutting of the Vasilopita (St. Basil's bread) is part of any New Year's celebration. According to the custom, a gold coin ("flouri") is inserted in the bread during its preparation. Whoever gets the piece with the gold coin is supposed to have a lucky New Year and the flouri becomes a good luck charm as well as memorabillia for that particular year.

*Lucky coin is just ceremonial and of no value. A more traditional old vasilopita coin replica flouri is available for sale here.

Giving the coin as a gift? Official Greek Vasilopita Coin with Collectors Case & Recipe are available here.
