Voyage to Cythera : The idea for a film is something that one can't say when it is born or how. There are things one reads, experiences, people one meets, things one hears, Stories that one stores in a sort of memory "store-room" without shape and form and that at some point due to some strange reason that no one every really knows how or why, you drag up as if from the depths of a well and they come to the surface. Sometimes the event is so sudden that one wonders and you ask yourself how it came into being. Then there is a time when all these elements being to select themselves, either in harmony with each.other or refuting each other. In the end, a theme emerges, a relationship, dramatic material, a series of image very often far removed from the material one started off with. This is somewhat how ULYSSES' GAZE was born.
Ulysses' Gaze A reworking of the "Return of Odysseus" myth which preceded Homer. Similar to Dante's version, there is a pre-Homeric version that Odysseus set sail again after reaching Ithaca. So the film becomes more a leaving than a homecoming.
Doubtless we live in a period of silence in history. And we try to find a response in ourselves because it's difficult to live in this silence. When there is no historical movement, it's normal to be tempted to look around oneself, during this groove cut into the continuity of history. For my generation who have lived through that continuity, there is a sadness, a disenchantment, which one cannot but express.
