Saint Anna is the mother of the Virgin Mary. According to the apocryphal Gospel of James, Anne and her husband Joachim, after years of childlessness, were visited by an angel who told them that they would conceive a child. Anne promised to dedicate the child to God's service. Joachim and Anne are believed to have given Mary to the service of the Second Temple when the girl was three years old. The date of December 9th honors her conception, but she is also honored with her husband, St. Joachim, on September 9. Together they are known as the saints of pious education for the religious instruction they provided their daughter. She is often depicted in art holding her Mary in her arms, and at times Mary is also holding Jesus, to demonstrate the family line. Saint Anne's relics can be found at: Mt. Athos; Island of Patmos; and the Tomb in the Garden of Gethsemane in Jerusalem. She is a patron saint of Quebec and Brittany, and patroness of women in labor and miners.
