M Magazine : Volume 2, Issue 6. Sept-Oct. 2006

One of the most recognized representatives of Greece, Dora Bakogiannis, graces the cover of M for this issue. She’s come a long way as mayor of the 2004 Olympic City, having earned international respect for improving the image of Athens, and leading to her receiving the 2005 World Mayor Award.

Now as the new Foreign Minister of Greece, her responsibilities deal with global issues such as terrorism. M asks her key questions regarding the Greek perspective on security, and how she plans on approaching her new challenges.

Watching news programs are never easy when much of what we see today is political strife, war-torn scenarios, and terrorist acts. The effects of these conflicts, whether we like it or not, do touch us in some way, whether it is through the increase in petroleum prices or a display of humanitarian outreach from our various home nations. No matter where we live, we are also affected psychologically, especially when we contemplate traveling overseas. Our first thought has now become, ‘will I be safe?’ This issue of M takes a look at terrorism and the need to understand why chains of events occur in order to develop solutions.

In the last fifty years, media has transformed into a diversity of mediums, styles, and formats. Satellites in space can hardly keep up with the broadcasting of the hundreds of channels around the world. Some of the individuals involved behind the scenes and on your TV screen come from a Hellenic background, and are dedicated to providing the world with knowledge. M profiles a number of these Greeks in media.

The activities of Greeks around the world are endless. From Canberra to Chicago, to Toronto and Mykonos, M continues to speak with various individuals who aim to maintain Hellenic values, culture, and history.
