Yiannis Ritsos
A Voice of Resileince and Hope-Selected Poems

Translated with an introduction by: George Pilitsi

Yiannis Ritsos has long been recognized as one of the most prolific writers of contemporary Greece and as one of Europe's most important poets of the twentieth century. In his seventy years of active life as poet, he produced works that continue to amaze his readers with the diversity of form, subject matter and technique he employs in his verses. In many of his poems, be they personal, political or historical in context, Ritsos shows a profound concern for freedom, social justice, and human love. The poems selected for translation and inclusion in the prevent volume focus not only on the individual's struggle to maintain his dignity in a world of social and psychological turmoil, but also, and more important, perhaps, on his hope and belief that freedom, justice and love will prevail. They are the poet's personal statements of love, patience, friendship and social justice with universal significance.

"In his introductory Essay, Professor Pilitsis shows a fine grasp of the relevant bibliography, both older and newer studies....His basic idea of emphasizing hope, while at the same time showing the terrible circumstances that would have discouraged most other people, is splendid, and most needed in out cotemporary world....His translations are consistently accurate and - equally important- poetical. They stand as poems in their own right. Furthermore, they are remarkably true to Ritso's own rhythms in the Greek; they have the "feel" of the originals...(Pilitsis)captures the true meaning of a word that a person with less keen knowledge of Greek would be likely to mistranslate."
